If we weren’t so busy, we could change the world.

Exposed Day 29

[This EYT is from a white, middle-class privileged perspective.]

Every single day I work with business owners and leaders who don’t have enough time.

Not enough time or energy for their goals, dreams, self, family, friends, rest, or everyday things.

Something else most of the business people I support have in common is how much they personally care about current events, making real change, and equality and justice for everyone.

However, in our work together when we’re crafting their plans or schedules… time for volunteering and giving back to organizations they care about is rarely the first to go in or sometimes even brought up.

And it’s not their fault, necessarily.

It’s easy to put issues like racism, climate change, the wage gap, health crises, LGTBQ+ rights on the back burner when you don’t have your own basic needs met, or even just feel like they’re not being met (speaking from personal experience on this).

Especially when we forget how these issues affect us personally.

It’s also easy to feel like if we can’t change everything, we can’t do anything. Apathy and overwhelm take over and keep us from taking action.

However, if we are to make real change, we can’t keep doing this.

We can’t keep living in time scarcity.

We can’t keep being too busy.

We definitely can’t forget how all of these things affect us on a daily basis.

I believe the reason why we feel so much time and money scarcity IS because of the wage gap, lack of support, discrimination and racism, and climate change.

Really though…it’s the chicken or the egg situation, and we have to decide when enough is enough and where to stop this cycle.

To be completely honest with you this is my mission as a holistic time coach.

On the outside looking in, I support business owners, creatives, and leaders authentically achieve their dreams and goals with lots of time and space to rest, play, and enjoy the little things that make life, life.

The deeper, more radical, and personally important reason?

The more people who achieve their big goals and dreams while being well-rested & taken care of…the more volunteering, giving back, and donating time and money happens.

When our own basic needs are met and we can actually recognize it, we can begin imagining, dreaming, and creating a both/and world rooted in care, satisfaction, and sufficiency.

I’m hopeful that this is eventually how everyone can get their basic needs met, live a meaningful life following their dreams, and create a better world for us all.

I want to break the vicious cycle of busyness in you and me, because how will real change actually happen if every single one of us isn’t making it a priority?

How will we make change if we’re exhausted and burned out?

All of our to-do lists need to include being of service to others, giving back, calling our representatives, and making changes for the better. But they can’t when we already add too much to it.

We all need to personally change our relationships to busyness and scarcity if we want to make real change. We can give something if we don’t have it to give.

We need to heal our own overwhelm in our own lives and businesses if we’re going to move past the larger overwhelm of our broken world and take action.

We need to do this work today if we want to keep existing.

It’s the most important thing we can do. So why isn’t it happening?
